Montco Towns - DUI checkpoints number increase

Due to Labor Day, Montgomery County towns — including Abington,  Upper Dublin, Cheltenham and Jenkintown — will increase DUI checkpoints soon after acquiring federal funds, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
In the cooperation with all the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative, 36 local police departments — and 600 statewide — will  "conduct roving patrols and checkpoints targeting motorists helped by the influence of drugs or alcohol," in keeping with a PennDOT press release.  Statewide enforcement shall be upped and PennDOT officials encourage individual municipalities to wave is border-to-border enforcement.
“People can have end-of-summer plans which entail alcohol, but safety is to be along at the forefront of everyone’s mind,” PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. “Getting in the area of the wheel when you’re impaired by drugs or alcohol puts your life in peril, as well as the lives of everyone sharing an open road on you. Do everyone a favor by designating a driver.”
PennDOT distributed $4.2 million in federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A little while ago, there are 169 alcohol-related crashes and five fatalities during Labor Day weekend in 2010.

The acronyms DUI, DWI, OMVI and OVI all refer to the same thing: operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The most commonly used terms are DUI, an acronym for Driving Under the Influence, and DWI, an acronym for Driving While Impaired.
